We are so used to seeing braces on school children that the majority of people think orthodontics is only for young people. Looking after your health and wellbeing is important throughout our lives and orthodontics is no exception. There is no age limit to correcting your smile and being attentive to your dental health is vital. It is true that many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications. This is why at Scottish Centre for Excellence in Dentistry (SCED) we are delighted to see children for orthodontics, and we want all our young patients to have the best possible dental health.
Our age is not a barrier to getting straight teeth, and sadly crooked teeth can be hard to clean, and this can result in serious tooth decay. Advanced, discreet and often invisible braces can move teeth to help you achieve that great smile. It is never too late that you cannot achieve a beautiful smile. Age allow us to pursue our own interests and passions. Take this advantage to invest in your smile and enjoy the beneficial effects it has on your life, with 65% of our patients having orthodontic treatment at SCED are adults.
There are many orthodontic treatments available at SCED to straighten your teeth. Perhaps the most recognised option is traditional metal braces, often seen worn by school children with multi coloured bands to hold the wires in place. A much more discreet and adult friendly version is ceramic (white) fixed braces which are almost clear. Then there are aligners which are thin, clear trays made to fit your teeth. Unlike metal braces, aligners are removable. The patient is responsible for putting them in and taking them out. Patients receive sets of aligners designed to move their teeth using the same method as braces: constant, gentle pressure. Dr Imran Shafi is our fully accredited specialist Invisalign orthodontist which is the world leading clear aligner system.
A full consultation with our specialist orthodontic will give you all the information you require to make an informed decision about what type of brace system is best for you.
